The We Are Africa Road Tour 2010 was a success! On August 1st, we set off on a mission to build a movement, and we did just that. Through a network of committed African Ancestry family members, established organizational partnerships and new friends, we celebrated our historical, cultural and genetic connections to Africa with almost 2,000 people from New Orleans to New England.
One of the brightest highlights of the Road Tour was meeting people and families and hearing their stories. It was an exciting sight to see 7 year-olds, 90 year-olds, and everyone in between engaged in celebrating Africa.
Another highlight was the reveals. We revealed the expected and the unexpected. Richard Beavers of House of Art Gallery in Brooklyn was surprised to learn that his paternal ancestry was Angola. Queen Nzingha fiercely defended Angola against the spread of slavery by the Portuguese. Ten years ago, Richard named his daughter Nzinga! Top Chef Carla Hall’s reveal was probably our highest energy reveal as she learned of her Nigeria roots during our DC stop at the Embassy of Nigeria. See the videos below.
And, it wouldn’t have been a Road Trip without the support of Cracker Barrel Old Country Stores. We used our iPad to do just about everything: book hotels, get directions, find local attractions, and to find a Cracker Barrel in every city. We looked forward to the apple butter, biscuits, and strawberry lemonade that immediately became Road Crew favorites. I would like to personally thank all of our partners and hosts. Please support the businesses and organizations that support the We Are Africa movement!
Stay tuned in the months to come as we bring you online reveals of the many people that used the Road Tour as an opportunity to find their roots!
